The end of dumb and bass

DnB is all over radio 1 and now all over a national broadsheet too for the first time in god knows how long. Blu Mar Ten's response on their blog is interesting too but I don't think this is ever how me have measured success before!!

NZ Aftermath mix by... DOC SCOTT!

Yo. This one amazed me. I am sorry to say that Doc Scott as well as being an all time personal hero too often plays some of my least favourite sets. With the a record box as deep as his it's never anthem bashing but just really uninspiring techy beats for an hour or two or maybe so minimal I would check out room 2,3,4,5,6,7 or the freezing cold outside area just past the exit.

This mix is different though, wobbles slightly at around 20 mins but he pulls it back round to deliver one of the most musical mixes I have heard in years from Scotty. Wicked.

Wednesday 4 February 2009

I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.

OK, OK, just a quick one though my poor neglected webpage.

I was interested to read (not for the first time by any means) about the death and near certain demise of drum and bass while on an occasional visit to http://www.dogsonacid.com/, which, like everyone, I used to frequent when it was like really cool but not any more because it isn't and that's the kind of shallow, whimsical show pony that I am. The broad consensus seemed to be that it is indeed dead (in my glass half full world anyway - there was no decisive evidance to the contrary).

If you go by how many posts there are every day on dogs on acid it would certainly seem like it and the scene does seem to be lacking any leadership or any consensus. Big guns seemingly abandoning the creative focus that made them big guns. No one taking their place. Nu skoolers not even making it past the dubstep section in the record store. There is still (some) great music being made but it seems like more people are writing off drum and bass than are converting to it and we know what that means.

The only reason this blog exists is because of the impact of dubstep/skull disco/future garage/wonky/slow house/bass/whatever had on dnb with even long time heads being turned. Some people listened and carried on making dnb that was more like dubstep, plenty now make both dnb and dubstep and some like Martyn converted entirely to the nu groove with international success.

Now there is great dnb but it seems spread more thinly than ever before.

February dnb reccomends:

Furney - So Ca Toah / This found you - Red Mist
Eveseon - Mesmorize - Shogun Limited / SGN:Ltd
Mixmaster Doc - Exodus - BIOS
Calibre
- Be there - Integral
Klute - Ashram - Commercial Suicide
MJ Cole - Sincere (Eveson bootleg mix)
Soulmatic - Self belief - Good Looking

Props also to Marcus Intalex at Soul:R - the Dat Music series 2 is quality, in particular:

Commix - Life we live and Underwater Scene
Lomax - Resist
Instra:mental - Hunter

My bag isn't exactly bulging though.

Spatial - Infrasonics 001 - 80207 / 70810

Hello February! At last. Snowy? yes, but still much better than January.

Keeping things downtempo for the time being - a new artist called Spatial with two esoterically labelled tracks '80207' and '70810' on new label Infrasonics. Really nice work, garagey but stripped down, with a definate Burial influence but not so much that you feel like getting a lawyer involved. More of this please.
